Sickle, aka Raphael Payne, was a supervillain and scientist. Considered to be a pivotal figure in the Land’s Golden Age of Heroes, Sickle’s long campaign against Cytopia was formative in the city state’s approach to Marks and supervillainy.
Career
In 1990, Sickle first debuted as a supervillain, alleging that he was acting in response to anti-Marked sentiment. At that point in history, such damage to public safety perpetrated by a single individual was unprecedented. Sickle often attacked civilian populations and infrastructure. His speeches, writing, and ideas from this period have been lost to time.
In addition to the Cytopian government, Sickle was often opposed by Daybreaker. One of the largest blows to Sickle’s villainous career came from Daybreaker— he had created a vaccine that could protect the citizens from Sickle’s manipulation, and the vaccine quickly spread across the city, effectively weakening the Tenet-level villain into a much smaller threat.
Nonetheless, Sickle’s villainous siege against the city of Cytopia continued, and on the 9th of July, 2001, Daybreaker sacrificed himself to defeat Sickle.
Personal Life
Raphael Payne arrived in Cytopia in 1980, an immigrant from overseas. He was a scientist, and found employment at the Cybil University from 1980 to 1988. During this time, he infiltrated Dr. Solomon’s research group and personal circle.
His only large contribution to the matter of Mark Studies is the Solomon-Payne Hypothesis: the theory of Mark Adaptation. The two of them, based on studies and projections done together, theorized that since Marks are created and influenced by their environment (as in, the body), then they can also adapt and change as that environment changes.
It is theorized that Payne had a relationship with someone during his time as a scientist in Cytopia, and perhaps even had a child, but this remains purely speculation.
Abilities and gear
Sickle’s Mark, ‘Thicker Than Water’, allows him to manipulate human tissue, especially blood.
His weapon of choice is a sickle.
