Black Mantle's career as a villain began in earnest when [[BULLET]] was slain on 8 September 2080 after BULLET left a grocery store after checking out, despite not engaging in villain activity at the time. After disemboweling the man, Black Mantle disappeared, leaving police to piece together the identity of the victim. Black Mantle evaded arrest before killing again a month later, this time targeting [[O.O.]] as she was on the way to a house party. Similar fates befell [[The Arboreal Arbiter]], [[The Mason]], and [[Crabapple]].

Black Mantle's killings, despite happening seemingly at random, always involve only one person. Civilians and heroes that attempt to intervene have never been seriously harmed by Black Mantle. However, the senseless violence that has quickly branded them a villain.
